Temperature

LSI/RSI are calculated at skin (heat transfer surface) temperature. Silica saturation is calculated at cold water basin temperature — where amorphous silica is least soluble.

If unknown, add 20°F (11°C) to exit temperature above. Skin temperature drives CaCO₃ scale risk — not bulk water temperature.
Used for silica saturation. Amorphous silica is normally soluble — it precipitates at the coldest point in the system. Defaults to 75°F (24°C) if not entered.

Silica Saturation Assessment

Evaluated at cold water basin temperature — amorphous silica is normally soluble (precipitates at lowest system temperature, not at heat transfer surfaces).

Magnesium Silicate Saturation Risk

Industry index: Mg(as CaCO₃) × SiO₂. Inversely soluble with temperature and pH. SI = log₁₀(product / pH threshold) — SI > 0 indicates precipitation risk. Thresholds: 12,000 (pH 7.5–8.5) and 3,000 (pH > 8.5) per Meyers IWC-99-64.

Calcium Magnesium Silicate Saturation Risk

Industry index: (Ca+Mg)(as CaCO₃) × SiO₂. Inversely soluble with temperature and pH. SI = log₁₀(product / 50,000) — risk is pH-gated: no flag below pH 8.4, caution 8.4–8.6, elevated risk above pH 8.6.

Calcium Sulfate Saturation Risk

Saturation Ratio (SR) = [Ca²⁺][SO₄²⁻] / Ksp. Evaluated at skin temperature — gypsum solubility decreases with temperature above ~40°C. SR > 0.8 warrants attention; SR > 1.0 indicates precipitation risk.
